Scrap Metal in Mitcham and South London | Our Scrap Yard in Croydon Answers Your Questions

There’s a reason why so many customers from Mitcham and the surrounding areas come to our scrap yard in Croydon. Here at D. Sullivan Metals Ltd, we’re about so much more than just scrap metal recycling. We’ve covered London from our current location since 1978 but have purchased scrap copper and steel, and a wide range of metals, since the 1940s. Our company is family-owned, family-run and built around family values.

Bring your scrap metal to our yard personally. Alternatively, have us supply you with roll-on/roll-off bins for storing scrap copper, steel and materials until we collect them.

Here, we answer some of the most common questions our scrap yard receives from customers across the capital.

What identification do I need to sell you scrap metal?

Due to changes in the law brought about on 3rd December 2012, anyone wishing to sell scrap metal will be required, by law, to register with a scrap metal recycling facility. These measures were introduced to control scrap metal theft. Setting up an account only takes a few minutes. Once registered with us, you will be able to sell materials quickly and easily. Our scrap yard welcomes domestic, commercial and industrial consignments of scrap copper, brass, steel, zinc and more.

Is identification mandatory?

Yes.

Acceptable forms of ID can include your current UK photocard driving licence, which acts as proof of identity and proof of address. This will be enough to set up an account. You can also use a passport supported by either a utility bill, like a gas, electricity, water, council tax, home telephone or bank statement, or Inland Revenue correspondence.

Mobile phone bills are not accepted as proof of residence when setting up an account with our scrap metal recycling company. Supporting utility bills must be more than three months old. A council tax bill which lasts for one year is permitted.

You also need ID to hire roll-on/roll-off bins.

Which metals do you buy?

We buy all non-ferrous scrap metals to include scrap copper, aluminium, brass, lead, steel and zinc. We also collect car batteries, catalytic converters, electric motors, starter motors, alternators and alloy wheels. Call our scrap yard in Croydon to request a full list of metals we will buy.

Should you need us to collect metals or materials from our roll-on/roll-off bins, call to arrange an appointment. We make collections in Mitcham and all South London areas.

Do you pay cash for scrap metal?

No. It is no longer legal for licenced scrap metal recycling companies to pay customers with cash. However, we do have a no-fuss cheque cashing agent onsite. Once registered with two forms of ID, our agent will cash your cheque instantly for a fee of £1.00 (payments under £50) or at a fee of 2% (payments over £50). This normally takes just a few minutes to set up.

We pay the current market rates for scrap copper, aluminium, brass, lead, steel and zinc, and for scrap car parts.

How do you pay for scrap metal?

Our scrap yard pays in several different ways:

  • 2% fee
  • Two forms of ID required

Fast Bank Transfer

  • No fees applied
  • BACS payment to your bank account within two hours

  • Our own onsite agent can cash cheques at a charge of 2%

How much do you pay for scrap metal?

The price we pay for scrap metal is based on the quality and quantity, and fluctuations in the worldwide market which alter day by day. By separating your materials, we can pay you more. Removing brass fittings from scrap copper, steel, plastic or wood, or contaminants from metals, allows our scrap yard to pay you at a higher market value for your waste materials.

Please call our metal recycling company for free advice and the most competitive quotations in the local area.

Do you collect scrap metal?

We may be able to collect scrap metal, but this would be based on the amount and distance. We are unable to collect smaller household items, but we can visit businesses, engineering companies and building sites on a one-off basis. If you would like a regular collection, you might benefit from having one of our roll-on/roll-off bins onsite for storing scrap metal.

If you have a larger-than-average amount of scrap metal for us to collect and buy, please give our scrap yard a call.

Which areas do you cover?

We are located at a scrap yard in Croydon so, if you have a consignment of scrap copper, aluminium, brass, lead, steel, zinc or car parts, we are easily reachable from Beckenham, Bromley, Purley, Sutton and Mitcham, as well as from all parts of South London. These are very much our key service areas, but we will consider travelling further for large collections.
